Already, the Jackson Square Alliance has extended our efforts to three green areas along Eighth Avenue, as well as the flower beds lining West 13th Street. With your help, we will continue to adopt other green areas.
In addition to the obvious aesthetic improvement, neighborhood beautification improves air quality (very important along busy Manhattan thoroughfares), gives insects and wildlife a place to call home (besides your recycling bins), absorbs excess noise and reduces erosion.
While everyone has rested in the shade of a neighborhood tree, most people don’t realize that shade also cools the pavement and buildings, which reduces energy demands.
Our work will see to it that generations of West Villagers will continue to reap these benefits and that every family will find a safe and welcoming environment.
